Guys! It’s alive!! Got Deep Seek v4 flash q4_k_m_xl running! On 64GB DDR4, i9 14900ks, 16GB VRAM 9070 machine!

Exciting Progress in AI Model Deployment: Deep Seek v4 Successfully Running on a High-Performance Machine

We are thrilled to share a significant milestone in our AI development journey: the successful deployment of the Deep Seek v4 model, version q4_k_m_xl, on a cutting-edge workstation. This setup features a robust configuration—including a 64GB DDR4 RAM, an Intel i9-14900KS processor, and a formidable 16GB VRAM NVIDIA RTX 9070 graphics card—allowing us to explore the capabilities of advanced deep learning models in a real-world environment.

Despite acknowledging that performance is currently modest, with the system operating at slower speeds primarily due to relying on an older PCIe 3 SSD for drive reads, the fact remains that the model is now up and running. This achievement signals a promising step toward further optimizations and more efficient AI workflows, which we anticipate will revolutionize our processes and outputs.

System Configuration and Setup Highlights:

  • Model Usage: We are currently utilizing the LMStudio interface for model deployment, with plans to transition to llama.cpp in the near future for enhanced performance and flexibility.
  • Context Length: 64,000 tokens, enabling handling of extensive conversational histories or large datasets.
  • GPU Offloading: Enabled at a level of 3-4, leveraging GPU resources for acceleration.
  • CPU Resources: Allocated 24 threads to maximize processing power.
  • Memory Management: Utilizing a unified key-value store with offloaded KV cache to the GPU to optimize memory footprint.
  • Model State: Configured to keep the model in memory, with this setting turned off temporarily during initial testing.
  • Attention Mechanism: Enabling flash attention for improved computational efficiency during inference.

Operational Notes:

During initial loading, the model may display a message indicating its size exceeds certain limits; simply press ‘Alt’ and proceed to load it. As an MoE (Mixture of Experts) model, it is designed to run effectively despite these prompts, confirming its compatibility and robustness in our environment.

Looking Ahead:

While performance tuning is ongoing, this deployment demonstrates the practical viability of running sophisticated large-scale models on accessible hardware configurations. Our ongoing efforts will focus on optimizing disk I/O, expanding GPU utilization, and refining memory management to unlock the full potential of Deep Seek v4.

We look forward to sharing further updates as we enhance system performance and capabilities. Stay tuned for more insights into the evolving landscape of AI deployment and model optimization.
